Directions: One place to catch the trail up Sentinel is from the parking for the Kidney Pond cabins. Backpack 7.2 or 7.6 miles from Roaring Brook, or 9.6 miles from South Branch Pond. Luckily Baxter State Park has a number of cabins and seem to be adding a few more with each year. For the next 2.3 miles, you walk through forest and over bog bridges.

In truth, Doubletop is not a technical climb (there were several children at the top when we visited), and the views, especially from South Peak, are breathtaking.

This is often a complicated aspect when planning a trip to Baxter is navigating the camping reservation system.

The Ranger is on duty usually until 9:30pm and if you miss him/her, they will stop by your site to check-in. With new location and focus, Carnaval Maine hopes third time is the charm. All sites during the merry month of May This is the only wheelchair accessible cabin in the campground. So, for the last few years, Ive been making the journey to Baxter to enjoy the wilderness.

Baxter State Park has no potable water but what they do have is an abundance of water sources and minimal industrial pollution. It has the best view of the mountain (Katahdin from the Abol side) and you can have a campfire, get firewood and enjoy the hiss & glow from the propane lantern over the lakeview. 12 lean-tos

Ive Stayed in cabin number 1 (Olws nest), 8 and 9 (Whispering Pines) for the last 5 years, but managed to snag some pics from the other cabins during labour day weekend as the young family crowd switched to the quiet grey beards.

The big selling point of the park is its rustic nature.

Camping reservations can be made 4 months until your arrival date, meaning that if you want to book the July 4th holiday and want to arrive on July 1st, then the earliest you can place the reservation is on March 1st. Ive only seen bear scat along the trail at Chimney Pond once. This is a great way for different generations of family to get together and pass on skills that will be appreciated for a lifetime.

I recommend continuing on to Jackson Pond, another 0.2 miles farther on the trail, as you can see Doubletop Mountain and other peaks in the backdrop of the peaceful pond.

Later in life a big regret was to discover the park and summit the tallest peak in the region later in life. You cannot see the cabins from the ranger station or the library. Baxter State Park is a fantastic model of an independent park and reserve that many land managers here in Canada should be looking at. Rocky Pond and Little Rocky Pond Aptly named ponds, as they both have boulders poking up through the pond surface that create good foreground for photos of more distant mountains!

My only complain is that you dont get a good idea of the scale until you arrive.
